LOVE CAME, a piano piece inspired by the words of poet Christina Rossetti, comes out as an e-single on 7 October, and will then appear on the Christmas Calm compilation album to be released on 4 November. Victorian poet Christina Rossetti’s enduring poem “Love Came Down at Christmas” implies that love is not something which can be manufactured or demanded. Instead, she speaks of it as a divine and infinite force that we receive from an external source and can pass on to and share with our fellow human beings – “Love shall be our token / Love be yours and love be mine”. With understated eloquence, the poet expresses the idea that by offering love, we also obtain it – a timely message for the holiday season, for those of any faith or none. Gregson, who was inspired by the poem for his latest piece, describes it as “a Christmas prayer, an evocative and beautiful text which has been set many times. I have composed a lyric-less interpretation of this timeless text and called it LOVE CAME.” Like the poem, his piece embodies the beauty which lies in all that is simple and uncomplicated, waiting to be discovered by us. Each note feels pure and carefully chosen, falling softly like a snowflake and bringing with it a sense of stillness. Inspired by the transcendental concepts expressed by Rossetti, it encapsulates the calm of those quiet end-of-year moments that offer us time for gratitude and reflection. Peter Gregson is known for acclaimed recording projects such as Bach Recomposed, as well as for his scores for some of the most popular TV series and films of recent years, including Roger Michell’s Blackbird and Alan Rickman’s A Little Chaos. He is about to release his sixth studio album, Quartets: Three and Four, a follow-up to his earlier EPs Quartets: One and Quartets: Two. The new album will be issued digitally by Deutsche Grammophon on 11 November 2022 together with a deluxe version which will feature his complete “quartet of quartets” and will be available on CD and vinyl as well as digitally. The Christmas Calm initiative LOVE CAME is part of the Christmas Calm initiative – a collaboration between Decca Records US, Decca Records UK, Mercury KX, Deutsche Grammophon and Universal Music Portugal. This international collaboration brings together 17 peaceful instrumental tracks, each contributed by a different artist, with the aim of providing listeners with the soothing benefits of music. While for some people Christmas evokes warm memories of family, friends and all the associated traditions, for others this time of year can incur significant and unacknowledged amounts of stress. Research has found that as many as one in three people report an increase in their stress level during the holiday season, but also that anxiety can be eased by listening to classical music. The Christmas Calm compilation will encourage listeners to enjoy a moment of tranquillity and serenity as the year draws to a close.
