In September 1971 a gang tunnelled into a London bank vault, and a radio ham half a mile away heard them doing it. A leather goods shop. A 40-foot tunnel. A walkie-talkie. The gang took over Le Sac, a shop two doors from Lloyds Bank on Baker Street, and dug about 40 feet under the Chicken Inn restaurant to the vault floor. On the night of 11 September 1971, radio ham Robert Rowlands picked up their walkie-talkie talk and called the police, but nobody knew which bank it was. In all, 268 safe deposit boxes were broken open; police recovered about 231,000 pounds. In January 1973 Anthony Gavin and two other men pleaded guilty and were each jailed for 12 years. Benjamin Wolfe, who had bought the shop's lease, denied it, was convicted and jailed for 8 years. Two men accused of handling money were acquitted. Anyone charged but not convicted is presumed innocent. Later stories that the government gagged the press with a D-notice are disputed: crime writer Duncan Campbell says no D-notice was even requested. Should police have found the right bank in time?
