And besties share secrets ✨ If you’ve ever struggled with stripping a piece of furniture, save this one! This acetone furniture hack can be a total game changer when you’re flipping furniture ❤️ Acetone works by dissolving certain finishes, making them easy to wipe away without having to use traditional paint stripper. It works especially well on some lacquers and other solvent-based finishes, which is why I always like to test it before reaching for my heavy duty stripper. Keep in mind acetone may also soften shellac finishes, but denatured alcohol is more effective on fully dissolving shellac. The acetone hack is amazing BUT it doesn’t work on everything! Fully cured oil-based poly is generally resistant to acetone, and some modern water-based finishes won’t break down easily either. Other coatings, including catalyzed finishes, can be resistant too. The exact formula matters, so always test a small area first. Here’s the trick: lay blue shop towels over the surface, soak them with acetone, and let them sit for maybe a minute. The towels help slow evaporation so the acetone has more time to sit on the surface. Check the finish, wipe it away when it starts breaking down, and repeat. Remember to always work with plenty of ventilation and be safe! Paint is absolutely not the bad guy, but don’t assume every dark finish needs to be painted! Sometimes there’s gorgeous wood grain hiding underneath that just needs a chance to shine. Save this for your next furniture flip, and send it to a friend who loves a good DIY furniture hack.
