When Deng Xiaoping reversed Mao's pro-birth policy with the one-child policy in the 1980s, city families complied because officials were promoted or fired based on enforcement. The countryside was different. There was no pension and no welfare out there, so a family needed a son for labor, and a daughter would marry into another family and take that labor with her. Infanticide became routine. Jiang describes families killing three or four newborn girls before finally getting a boy. It is why Chinese doctors are still forbidden by law from telling parents the sex of a baby before birth. Jiang's own three children were all born in China, and he did not know he had a son until the delivery. 00:00 China Misconceptions and a $100 Hospital Bill 8:09 Raising Kids Abroad, Adderall, and American Food 17:02 How Mexican Cartels Launder Money for Rich Chinese 24:12 The Red Nobility Who Actually Run China From Overseas 34:06 Why COVID Proved Beijing Wants Control, Not Innovation 44:38 Taiwan, TSMC, and Why Japan Blocks Reunification 54:47 The Quad and China's One Friend in Asia Jiang has spent his career inside Chinese education and now writes about the country's politics, and his account keeps landing on the same conclusion: the system is built for control, not innovation. He calls China a plantation economy, run by a "red nobility" of revolutionary military families whose members largely live overseas, many of them in the United States, tracked by the State Department and unknown to the public. Jack Ma got too visible and was cut down. COVID, he argues, was the moment the Party knowingly imploded its own economy rather than let a middle class keep growing, and the death toll remains a state secret. The episode also covers why China imports a quarter of its food after moving farmers into factories, the suicide nets at Foxconn plants that build iPhones, and the arrangement where wealthy Chinese borrow cash from Mexican cartels and repay it through inflated trade invoices, laundering drug money and buying American real estate at the same time. Jiang argues Xi Jinping is a frontman with no succession plan and no real foreign strategy, and that China now has exactly one friend in Asia while South Korea, Japan, India, Australia and Southeast Asia all quietly organize against it.
