JAPAN vs ITALY | HIGHLIGHTS | Women's VNL 2025. Japan loses to world number one Italy in full sets, marking first loss of tournament in Women's Nations League! The second week of the preliminary round of the Volleyball Nations League 2025 (VNL) Hong Kong China Tournament has been held in Hong Kong (Hong Kong China) since Wednesday, June 18th. The Japan women's volleyball team, ranked 5th in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced off against Italy, ranked 1st, on Friday, June 20th (Japan time), and was defeated in a full set with a score of 2-3 (23-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-20, 17-19), suffering their first loss of the tournament. The first set began with Italy spiking from a high hitting point, and Japan responded with a well-placed spike from Wada Yukiko. Sato Yoshino's spike bounced off the opponent's blocker's hand, giving Japan the advantage in the first half. With a serve point from Seki Nanami making it 12-8, Italy couldn't help but call a timeout. Italy continued to score with powerful spikes, quickly closing the gap. After that, Japan's attackers, including Wada and Sato, held on and the game went back and forth, but in the end Italy won 23-25. In the second set, Japan's attackers fended off Italy's blocks, and Japan took the lead at the start. Libero Fukudome Keimi's risky receive, Shimamura Haruyo's block point, and Ishikawa Mayu's service point gave Japan a 10-6 lead. Relief server Kitamado Ayane's good serve countered Italy's attacks, and Japan further widened the gap. Miyabe Airi's serve point put Japan ahead of Italy, and finally Wada's no-touch ace gave Japan a 25-16 lead in the second set. In the third set, Italy's varied serves disrupted Japan's serve receives, allowing them to take the lead. Towards the middle of the game, Japan was at the mercy of Italy's ace's varying spikes, and called a timeout when they were trailing 4-8. However, Italy continued to attack without letting up, widening the gap, forcing Japan into a defensive battle. Japan sent bench members onto the court in an attempt to make a comeback, but Italy's powerful hits meant they lost the set 15-25. In the fourth set, Italy continued to show no signs of slowing down their attacks, while Japan's spikers, including Ishikawa and Wada, held on with spikes aimed at the hands of the opponents' blocks. From the middle of the set, Sato scored points with powerful spikes and effective serves, tying the score at 15-15. With momentum on their side, Japan took a step forward with consecutive spike points from Ishikawa, and then Megumi Fukasawa's serves disrupted Italy's serve reception, successfully widening their lead. In the end, Ishikawa's long-legged spike was successful, and with some mistakes from Italy, Japan took the set 25-20. In the final set, Seki's serve disrupted Italy's serve reception, and Miyabe's direct spike immediately made it 2-0, but Italy couldn't help but call a timeout. Italy's varying serves and high blocks allowed them to turn the game around to 2-3, and Japan caught up with Ishikawa's attacks and serves to tie the score at 4-4. After that, neither team gave in and the game continued with side-outs, but Italy's attacks, which included feints and other variations, gradually widened their lead, and at 7-9, Japan called a timeout. Towards the end, Japan's attackers, including Ishikawa, Wada, and Sato, held their ground and brought the game to deuce with side-outs, but in the end, the opponent's high blocks blocked their way and the score was 17-19. Japan lost the set 2-3.
