Bengaluru-based Aspera Industries is building an autonomous, amphibious cargo aircraft called Eureka. While this aircraft is currently still in the subscale prototype phase, founder Khushi Mittal told us that Aspera Industries hopes to begin commercial operations with the full-sized Eureka (10x the size of the current subscale prototype) in 20 to 24 months. Aspera Industries wants to reduce the cost per tonne per kilometre for Eureka cargo such that it matches the cost per tonne per kilometre for shipping containers, while being roughly 20x faster. To do this, they've used carbon fibre to keep the weight of their aircraft low while preserving its structural integrity. They also plan to exclusively transport cargo between seaports, thereby allowing them to use the ocean as a runway. Their amphibious cargo aircraft has hydrofoils which allow it to take off and land from water. By 2036, Aspera Industries wants to have built an enormous fleet of 10,000 airplanes, but this is just the start. In order to match the cargo moving output of the global container shipping industry, Khushi Mittal believes that Aspera Industries will need to build 90,000 to 100,000 airplanes.
