Scientists Develop Cooling Film That Works Without Water or Electricity Researchers in South Korea have developed an innovative cooling film that can lower electronic device temperatures by up to 18.2°C without requiring an external water supply or electricity to power the cooling process. The research team, led by Professor Seong Kyun Kim at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), created the flexible material using nanocellulose and moisture-absorbing organic ionic molecules. The film absorbs moisture from the surrounding air and stores it until an electronic device heats up. As the stored moisture evaporates, it draws heat away from the device, naturally lowering its surface temperature. In experiments, the material reduced temperatures from 72.3°C to 54.1°C, maintaining its cooling effect for more than 12 hours. Unlike conventional cooling materials, the film remains flexible and adhesive, allowing it to attach firmly to metals, semiconductors, and glass. Researchers also reported that it resists corrosion despite containing moisture. The technology could offer a promising solution for managing heat in AI data centers, smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicle batteries, potentially reducing dependence on energy-intensive cooling systems. However, further testing is needed to establish its long-term performance and commercial viability. The findings were published in *Small Structures* in 2026.
