As muslims, we are encouraged to read the Qur'an and to think and reflect upon the principles that can be found there. We are encouraged to take guidance from these principles, to act upon them, and to use them to inform your life. This halaqah is about an important theme that runs throughout the Qur'an - “say good to the people” or “speak good to the people”. We must speak to people in a good way. There are two conditions that must be met for a statement to be a good statement. i) How you say it must not be harsh. Be kind to the people. ii) The meaning of what you say. The meaning should be good, not negative. Parents: Parents are to be given the highest level of respect by muslims, so use the best words and the best speech for your parents. The Qur’an instructs us not to repel them by speaking roughly to them. “do not even say oof to them”. Instead speak in positive tones when you speak to your parents. Use noble words and good words. Do not use harsh or dismissive gestures or facial expressions. Beggars: Do not be harsh with beggars. Do not repel them harshly; do not speak to them harshly. The Ignorant: How do you speak with people who are harsh or rude toward you as a muslims? We are instructed to walk softly upon the Earth. Wish peace upon them. Respond in kindness.
