Cell phone footage released by the Southern Gitants Brigade of Yemen shows even more evidence of the Houthis near the Bab al-Mandab approaches being completely overrun while they try to retreat on foot into the desert. Here's what's happening, and why we're seeing footage like this for those of you that aren't following the Yemen situation. Yemeni government-aligned forces said on Monday they had retaken ground around the Bab al-Mandab Strait from Houthi fighters, the first significant counteroffensive on that coast since the Iran-aligned group seized most of Yemen's southwestern shoreline in September. Majid Abdullah al-Nuzayli said the Southern Giants Brigades and Nation's Shield forces had secured approaches to the strait, taken Dhubab airport, and cut the road between Dhubab and Mokha, leaving hundreds of Houthi fighters surrounded. The Giants announced a "decisive" operation against Houthi positions in the area. Saudi-led coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said about 100 fighter jets had taken part at daybreak, striking 324 high-value targets, with air cover continuing over the strait, sending the Houthis into complete disarray. The push reverses, at least locally, a Houthi advance that between 9 and 11 September took Hays, al-Khokha, Mokha, and Dhubab, reached the Zuqar and Hanish islands, and put fighters on Mayyun, or Perim, in the middle of the strait. That surge covered roughly 120 kilometers in two days after government lines on the Tihama plain collapsed near Jabal al-Nar, amid poor coordination, thin air support, and panic in units loyal to the internationally recognized government. The Giants and allied tribal fighters spent the rest of September holding the southern contact line around Kahboub and al-Mudaribah in Lahj. Monday's attack, launched a day after Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced Operation Dawn of Yemen, was a flanking cut of the Dhubab–Mokha road under heavy air interdiction. With vehicles hit and the supply route closed, the coastal garrison's choices narrowed to surrender, staying under bombardment, or breaking out on foot or by sea.
