Did Tipu Sultan's rockets influence America's national anthem? The surprising answer connects Indian military history, the British Empire, rocket technology and the United States! Nearly 250 years ago, Mysore's army developed powerful iron-cased rockets that helped defeat British forces during the Anglo-Mysore Wars. But how did this Indian technology reach America? **TIPU SULTAN'S REVOLUTIONARY ROCKETS** During the 18th century, Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan developed and improved military rockets using iron tubes instead of traditional paper, bamboo or wooden casings. The stronger iron casing allowed greater pressure, producing more powerful thrust and ranges of approximately 2 kilometres. These weapons became known as Mysorean rockets. **BATTLE OF POLLILUR — 10 SEPTEMBER 1780** During the Second Anglo-Mysore War, Tipu Sultan led Mysorean forces against British East India Company troops commanded by Colonel William Baillie. Rocket attacks contributed to a devastating British defeat. Historical accounts suggest a rocket may have ignited British ammunition stores, causing an explosion during the battle. **HOW BRITAIN ADOPTED MYSOREAN ROCKET TECHNOLOGY** After Tipu Sultan died defending Srirangapatna in 1799, the British captured Mysorean rockets and military equipment. British inventor William Congreve subsequently developed improved military rockets influenced by the Indian designs. These became known as Congreve rockets. **THE CONNECTION TO AMERICA'S NATIONAL ANTHEM** In September 1814, British forces used Congreve rockets while attacking Fort McHenry in Baltimore during the War of 1812. American lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment and wrote a poem describing the rockets. That poem became The Star-Spangled Banner, officially adopted as the national anthem of the United States in 1931. **APJ ABDUL KALAM'S NASA DISCOVERY** During his NASA training in 1963, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam visited the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. In his autobiography Wings of Fire, Kalam recalled seeing a painting depicting Tipu Sultan's army using rockets against British soldiers. He reflected on how this important chapter of Indian rocketry was commemorated far from India. From Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan to William Congreve, Francis Scott Key and APJ Abdul Kalam, this is the extraordinary global history of Mysorean rocket technology.
