Day 1 of the IVP was not short of drama as a false start in the men's 4x100 metres relay heat number two saw the favorite, the team from NTU, which has two out of the four relay members that captured silver medal at the recent SEA Games 2011, being disqualified over a false start incident. NTU sprinter for their first leg, Tan Tze Jung anticipated the start and was clearly seen bursting off the blocks way faster than the rest of the other teams. As the officials deliberated over the incident, the 24-year old was observed looking distraught on the possibility of his team being disqualified under new IAAF one-strike false start ruling. The officials in the end stood firm and handed NTU relay team a red card which means an automatic disqualification. Team NTU still however ran the race under protest. Although finishing first in their heat, they were subsequently chalked off the relay roster for the finals with a DQ. With team NTU out of the running, this disqualification not only handed team NUS a chance to successfully defend their men's relay 4x100 metres title, but it might also hurt NTU men, and overall Championship standings considering both NUS and NTU are close on points after Day 1 proceedings.
