Ever wonder if you could shoot a gun into space? The High Altitude Research Program (or HARP) was a joint US-Canadian initiative from the 1960s, at the height of the Space Race. Its main purpose was to research the use of ballistics to deliver objects into the upper atmosphere and orbit. Put simply: the project created several absolutely enormous guns to try and shoot things into space. Originally designed by Canadian artillery engineer Gerald Bull, the HARP guns were made of two connected 65-foot, 16” naval cannons, so large that they were impractical for military use. Great…what now? Well, the project hoped to use a HARP gun to deliver satellites without a rocket. By the end of 1966, one of the HARP guns in Yuma, Arizona was able to fire a delivery vehicle 112 miles into the sky, which remains the world record for highest projectile ever fired.
