One of the most interesting claims I've heard about the new 8.3L Duramax Diesel is that it could actually be slightly more fuel efficient than the outgoing 6.6L Duramax. If that's true, that's seriously impressive. We're talking about an engine that jumps from 6.6 liters to 8.3 liters, while producing a massive 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque. But I definitely have some questions. The new 8.3L Duramax is said to use a lower compression ratio than the outgoing engine, although GM hasn't officially released the exact compression ratio yet. Generally speaking, lowering compression can work against thermal efficiency, depending on the overall combustion strategy. Combine that with a massive increase in displacement, and you'd naturally question how this engine could actually use LESS fuel. Of course, displacement and compression ratio aren't the whole story. GM has made substantial changes to the combustion system, air management, cooling and overall engine design. The new Duramax also produces huge amounts of torque extremely low in the RPM range, potentially allowing it to accomplish more work at lower engine speeds. So maybe GM really has managed to pull it off. Until we can actually put the new 8.3L Duramax on the road and compare real-world fuel consumption against the outgoing 6.6L, I'm remaining skeptical.
