Most people think the trapped water heats up and keeps you warm, but water pulls heat from your body about 25 times faster than air. The warmth comes from the suit itself. In 1951, Hugh Bradner, a physicist who had helped build the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, was trying to keep Navy frogmen warm. Until then, divers tried to stay dry, and once water got into their wool underwear, it stopped keeping them warm. Bradner saw that a diver doesn’t need to be dry to stay warm. He made his suit from neoprene foam full of tiny sealed gas bubbles that water can’t get into, so it insulates even when soaked. The Navy sat on the idea for years, but the suit went on sale to the public anyway, and Bradner made sure none of the profit went to him.
