Layla Murad’s secret marriage to one of the Free Officers who came to power in July 1952 and went through bitter internal struggles among themselves provides a gendered account of the revolutionary transition into the Nasserist state. In that transition, masculinity, intercommunal love, sex, and personal rivalries played critical roles in shaping public policies and patronage networks. In sum, the life and legacy of Layla Murad provide an excellent example to showcase that Jews of Egypt and the Arab East broadly lived within a web of emotional, social, and institutional relations, thus with multiple and fluid identities, rather than lived under the narrow religious identity.
