Eyewitness video obtained exclusively by Reuters shows the tense moments aboard a Flydubai flight after passengers realised there was a commotion in the cockpit. Some passengers can be heard whimpering and screaming as others stand up, move through the aisle and rush to help the injured pilot. The footage, recorded aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 on September 30, 2026, shows Captain Smit Machchhar bloodied and lying on the floor of the aircraft after an apparent attack. Passengers and crew can be heard trying to assist him, giving him small amounts of water, adjusting a pillow under his head and asking about his injuries. In the video, the injured pilot tells those around him that his head is spinning and hurting and that his hand is in pain. He also asks for a painkiller and paracetamol as passengers attempt to comfort him and provide first aid. According to the UAE prosecutor general, the co-pilot of Flydubai flight FZ1073 allegedly attempted to carry out a ā€œterrorist attackā€ using a crash axe during the flight. Passengers and crew members intervened and subdued the co-pilot, averting what Israeli officials described as an apparent attempt to crash the aircraft. The flight was travelling from the United Arab Emirates towards Israel when it transmitted emergency signals and diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, on September 30. The aircraft was carrying more than 170 passengers and crew. Reuters independently verified the footage using the aircraft's seats, headrests and interior, which matched Flydubai archive imagery and other verified visuals. Three men seen in the video were also identified in corroborating footage, while the facial features of the injured man matched images of Captain Smit Machchhar later released by authorities. Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 also confirmed the aircraft as Flydubai flight FZ107. The investigation into the incident, including the suspect's motive, remains ongoing. The UAE is leading the investigation, with authorities expected to release further findings after completing the necessary procedures.
