Leaving the southern edge of the Hexi Corridor, this peaceful high-altitude drive gradually approaches the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains beneath a mostly clear sky. The journey begins at the S313–S213 junction in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, Zhangye, Gansu. It follows S313 westward, reaches G213 near Baizhuangzi Village, and finishes close to the Qinggou Road Maintenance Station on G213. This video documents the approach to the northern gateway of the Qilian Mountains No. 9 Highway. It is not a complete drive along the entire No. 9 Highway. Across only 21 kilometers, the elevation rises from approximately 2,079 to 2,470 meters, revealing a gradual transition from broad valleys and dry foothill grasslands to the higher mountain environment of the Qilian range. The landscape here belongs to the northeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau and the northern side of the Qilian Mountains. Wide alluvial terraces, seasonal river channels, exposed slopes and scattered highland vegetation reflect the dry climate of northwestern China. Around Qinggou and the Jinchang River corridor, ecological restoration and roadside planting projects have helped improve water conservation, stabilize the landscape and create a greener “view from the car window.” Baizhuangzi is an important starting area of the modern G213 Sunan–Qilian highway. Completed in 2021, the 62.77-kilometer second-class highway created a more direct connection between Sunan in Gansu and Qilian County in Qinghai. It links the northern and southern sides of the Qilian Mountains, improves transport for remote pastoral communities and strengthens the connection between the Gansu–Qinghai travel circuits. This G213 corridor later became one of the main foundations of the Qilian Mountains No. 9 Highway tourism route. The wider No. 9 Highway is promoted as an approximately 600-kilometer self-driving loop connecting the landscapes and communities of Sunan and Qilian. Its broader region includes snow-covered peaks, glaciers, forests, alpine grasslands, river valleys, canyons, Danxia formations and historic grottoes. This particular drive only reaches the northern entrance area and continues for a limited section near Qinggou. It does not cover the complete loop, the Dongshan Tunnel or the major attractions farther inside the Qilian Mountains. Sunan is also China’s only Yugur autonomous county. The Yugur people trace important parts of their history to the ancient Hexi Uyghurs and the cultural exchanges of the Silk Road. Pastoral life, horses, sheep farming, traditional songs, distinctive clothing and several spoken languages remain important elements of the region’s cultural identity. Beyond this short route, travelers can explore the Yugur Cultural Corridor, Kangle Grassland, Mati Temple Grottoes, Binggou Danxia, the Bars Snow Mountains and the Qilian Mountain Deer Culture Ecotourism Area. These attractions are not all located directly beside this 21-kilometer drive, but together they form the wider natural and cultural setting of Sunan and the No. 9 Highway.
