#evolution #artificiallife #artificialintelligence In this video, I run an evolutionary simulation where intelligent behavior emerges through natural selection, artificial life systems, and neural network evolution. There are no predefined roles and no scripted actions—everything you see is learned and developed over time through survival and adaptation. The simulation environment supports herbivores, omnivores, and predators, but none of these behaviors are explicitly programmed. Each agent is controlled by an evolving neural network, allowing complex strategies like hunting, fleeing, and resource gathering to emerge naturally. This makes the experiment a powerful example of artificial intelligence driven purely by evolution. For this experiment, I introduce a survival challenge where 12 agents compete in an arena with only 20 seconds to find and consume food, either plants or meat. Only the top-performing agents survive and reproduce, driving rapid evolution across approximately 4800 generations. I also extend the simulation by allowing neural networks to grow in complexity over time, including the addition of new neurons and a memory neuron that enables agents to retain information between decisions. This creates more advanced and adaptive behaviors as evolution progresses. Throughout the simulation, several interesting patterns emerge. Early generations are dominated by large, simple agents, but over time there is a clear shift toward smaller, faster, and more intelligent agents. Combat behavior begins to appear as agents compete more aggressively for resources. Interestingly, obstacle avoidance does not evolve as expected, which may actually provide a survival advantage in certain scenarios. In the final phase, I test the evolved agents in large-scale combat scenarios and compare their performance against agents from earlier generations to see how evolution has shaped their behavior and intelligence. This experiment showcases how complex artificial intelligence, emergent behavior, and evolutionary strategies can arise from simple rules, making it a fascinating look into neural networks, simulation, and the future of AI systems.
