Clean transfer from a rare 1987 cassette — correct pitch/tempo (no distortion). Digitized from a rare 1987 cassette "Miracle of Love." This video preserves Sarah Chen's beautiful performance of "There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry)," first recorded by Billy Ocean. Written and produced by Wayne Brathwaite and Barry Eastmond, Ocean's version topped the U.S. Billboard chart in 1986. The song rode on a wave of hit songs by Ocean. Making a successful cover by a Taiwan female singer was no small feat. Sarah Chen's version came out in 1987 and soon went out of print after the label's restructuring. The master tape was said to have been damaged. A 2002 vinyl reissue seemed to have been mastered at the wrong tempo and key, distorting Chen’s timbre and precision. This video restores Chen’s voice as heard on the original cassette. Produced by Reggie Verghese, the track is a faithful cover, though Chen sings in her own style. With a gender-reversed perspective, she carries her unique phrasing: not beat-driven, she glides smoothly for four minutes, pouring her emotion out with control. The acceptance of lost love in Chen’s major hit, "Dream to Awakening," may be traced back to "There’ll Be Sad Songs." The one and only Sarah Chen, magician of romantic ballads, inadvertently keeps a tight hold on her fans. That final whisper of "I love you” still melts hearts, thirty years after the singer had all but vanished. Her sad songs still make us cry.
