Medicare Open Enrollment just opened, and federal regulators issued an urgent warning: scammers are now paying to land at the very top of your Google results with fake websites that look identical to the official government site. If you or your aging parents type “Medicare” into a search bar and click that first link, you could hand your identity to a stranger, get signed up for a plan that drops your doctors, and have your phone flooded with dozens of high-pressure sales calls within minutes. It gets worse. In a new alert, the FBI described scammers moving skeptical victims onto live video calls, sitting in front of staged desks with official-looking federal seals and actors in suits posing as federal agents. This is the most sophisticated wave of Medicare fraud we have ever seen, and it is hitting right as 65 million Americans go online to compare plans. In this deep dive I show you the simple 10-second check that tells you whether a Medicare link is real or a dangerous copy, what happens the moment you type your number into a scam ad, why the viral rumor about a new microchip Medicare card is a con, and the five-minute safeguard you can set up on a loved one’s phone today. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN - The 10-second URL check that separates the real Medicare site from a copycat - What really happens in the first hour after you enter your number into a scam ad - Why the “new microchip Medicare card” story is a con designed to drain your account - How the FBI says scammers now use fake video calls and federal seals to seem legit - A five-minute phone and browser safeguard to protect an aging parent today CHAPTERS 0:00 The search result that could cost you everything 3:07 How open enrollment became scam season 4:27 How search engines sell the top spot 5:40 Anatomy of a fake Medicare website 7:10 The first hour after you enter your number 8:40 Why these plans drop your doctors and drugs 9:50 The FBI warning: fake agents on video calls 11:30 Caller ID spoofing, and why it fools everyone 12:45 The microchip Medicare card con, debunked 14:20 The 10-second check: look for .gov and skip the ads 17:20 The only phone numbers you should trust 18:40 The 5-minute safeguard for a loved one’s phone 20:30 Free help (SHIP, 1-800-MEDICARE), and the bottom line FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is the first result when I search “Medicare” the official site? Not necessarily. The FTC warned on September 28, 2026 that scammers and deceptive marketers pay to appear at the top of search results using official-looking logos and similar web addresses. Always scroll past ads and look for the .gov ending (Medicare.gov). Does Medicare call, text, or email you? No. Medicare does not make unsolicited calls, texts, or emails asking for your Medicare number, bank details, or payment. Plans also cannot market 2027 coverage before October 1, so an unsolicited pitch is a red flag. Is the new microchip Medicare card real? No. There is no new plastic microchip card you must pay for or “activate.” It is a con to steal your Medicare number and money. Your Medicare card is free. What should I do if I already gave out my information? Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), review your Medicare statements for charges you do not recognize, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and watch for identity theft. Where can I get free, trustworthy help? Use Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE, and for free one-on-one counseling contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at shiphelp.org. No commissions, no sales pressure.
