This photo was taken during World War II, when General montgomery interviewed a captured German general. Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma was captured by British forces on November 4, 1942, at Tel el Mampsra, near El Alamein, Egypt. The day before, Hitler had ordered his forces to hold their ground without retreating. Von Thoma called the order “madness,” because the Afrika Korps was almost out of tanks. He then boarded his headquarters guard’s tank and headed for the front line. His tank caught fire, so he climbed out, stood calmly among the wrecked tanks, and was taken prisoner by the British. His motive is disputed: Rommel suspected he was seeking death in battle, while some staff officers suspected he deliberately surrendered. That same night, he dined with Montgomery. He was held in several prisoner-of-war camps in Great Britain, then repatriated to Germany on November 25, 1947. He died in Dachau on April 30, 1948.
