Popular newlyweds Rick and Gail Brink are shot execution-style in their Michigan home. But it will take 25 years before investigators uncover a flaw in the timeline that convinces them of the killer’s guilt. In this episode, we head to Holland, Michigan, a small Dutch-founded town where people leave their doors unlocked and their keys in the car. Rick and Gail Brink were well-liked newlyweds who had spent months fixing up their first home in the country. When neither shows up for work one Monday in 1987, Rick’s parents drive out to check on them. Gail is found in bed, shot three times in the head. Rick is slumped across the front seat of his truck in his wedding clothes and galoshes, shot twice through a window rolled three-quarters down on a cold night. Nothing was taken, including $400 in a drawer. Detective Lauren Wassink rebuilds the couple’s final hours after a friend’s wedding and a stop at Calypso’s bar. The investigation leads to Gail’s jealous ex-boyfriend, who admits to driving past the house and keeping the couple’s wedding photo, and the home’s former owner, a paranoid drug-dealing biker who believes the killing was a gang hit meant for him. When every lead runs dry, the case goes cold. Twenty-four years later, cold case detectives Venus Repper and David Blakeley reopen the file and notice something the original team never explained: a pillow from the living room placed over Gail’s face after she was killed.
