1800s Church left to rot, should this be a crime Explore No. 102 ✅🇬🇧 --------------------------------- History 📜🗃️ 🏛️ The building at 4 Castle Gate The building now associated with The Omega New Grace Church at 4 Castle Gate, Nottingham is a Grade II listed Victorian building. Its history goes back far beyond the Omega congregation. The site has connections with Independent/Congregational worship dating back to the 1650s, making it one of Nottingham's significant historic nonconformist sites. A meeting house on Castle Gate was formally registered in 1689, following the Act of Toleration which allowed Protestant dissenting congregations to worship legally. ⛪ The present building – 1863 The current building was constructed in 1863, designed by Nottingham architect Richard Charles Sutton for the trustees of the Congregational Church. It opened for worship in 1864. Historic England describes it as being built in a Lombardic-Venetian Revival style, using red brick with blue and yellow brick detailing, ashlar stonework and slate roofs. It was listed Grade II in 1985. Historic England It wasn't simply a small chapel either. The complex included the church, lecture facilities and classrooms, making it an important centre for the congregation and wider community. A 1906 Nottingham guide described the site as an extensive block containing the church, lecture hall and various classrooms. Nottinghamshire History 🌳 There was even a burial ground One particularly interesting part of its history is that the church had a burial ground immediately to the east. That land was sold for development in 1955. The remains were supposedly to be re-interred, but the surviving Castle Gate records at the University of Nottingham don't contain evidence establishing exactly where the remains were eventually moved. University of Nottingham 📜 The congregation's influence Castle Gate was a particularly influential Nottingham congregation. Over the years it helped establish a number of other churches and missions around the city, including churches or missions at St James's/Park Hill, Radford, Queen's Walk, Thorneywood, St Ann's Well Road and Norton Street. The University of Nottingham holds a substantial collection of Castle Gate records, including church minutes going back to 1736, membership lists, annual reports, church magazines and documents relating to its burial ground.
