If I was told to pick a favorite live action movie, it would be Moana. It retells the story with fantastical visuals and mixed media that gives the film its own charm while staying faithful to the original. The storyline follows Moana (Catherine Laga'aia) as her village faces starvation because every piece of food has rotted, wilted or disappeared. She knows the reason: the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) stole the heart of Te Fiti, the creation goddess, causing nature to decay or flee. Now, she must take the heart of Te Fiti that the ocean granted her and ignore the rules of the tribe to save them all. Moana is a must-watch whether you’ve seen the original or not. I love everything down to the tiny details. However, if I had to pick one thing that I enjoyed most, it would be the visuals. In general, I think that live action gives the film a more mature feeling than the animated version, with more dark and mystical air to the settings than the original, which makes it better suited for a pre-teen/teenage audience. The story lands more seriously and feels refreshing even though not much has changed. I also like the ornate costumes and lush set designs. Moana takes place in a fictional version of Polynesia, a vast area of islands in Oceania, and I felt like I was put right on the island. Watching the film, I could almost smell the ocean breeze! While on the topic of visuals, I loved watching Maui sing ‘You’re Welcome.’ As he boasts about himself and distracts Moana, the background turns into a kind of tapestry of legends. It becomes a physical representation of Maui distracting Moana. Speaking of songs, the singers for this adaptation were perfectly cast for their roles and they all sound amazing. The story itself didn’t change, but the film still feels new somehow. Even though I knew the plot, I was still moved when Moana kept discovering herself and overcoming her fears and doubts. It is definitely worth your time. The film’s message is that only you can tell yourself who you are, what you want and to not fear the unknown. Note that there are many mentions of fighting, injuries, starvation and death, but nothing visually graphic. I give Moana 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18, plus adults.
