50년 만에 세상 밖으로 '세계 최고 금속활자본' 직지 실물 공개 Jijki the world's oldest extant book printed with movable metal typeface during Korea's Goryeo Kingdom in the 14th century will be available for public viewing in Paris starting tomorrow. The exhibition will run for three months. Shin Se-byuck reports. Korea's Jikji Simche Yojeol, the world's oldest surviving book made by movable metal print, will be shown to the public in France for the first time in half a century. Starting Wednesday, April 12, the Jikji will go on display at the National Library of France as part of an exhibition on the history of printing. The last time the book was available for public viewing was exactly 50 years ago in 1973. The Jikji is about the teachings of great Buddhist priests. The book was printed at Heungdeok Temple in Cheongju in 1377 during the Goryeo Kingdom. That was 78 years before the Gutenberg Bible, the earliest substantial book printed using metal type in Europe. In 2001, the Jikji was formally added to UNESCO's Memory of the World. "Jikji" originally consisted of two volumes, but only one copy of the second volume currently exists. The book was initially acquired by the first French minister to Korea in the 19th century. It was put up for auction in Paris in 1911 and then donated to the National Library of France in 1952. Ever since it has been kept in the library's storage. During the exhibition, the Gutenberg Bible and the "Bois Protat," two of the other oldest printings in the world, will also be presented together. The exhibition will run for three months until July 16th.
