What changes when you become the person everyone expects to have the answers? Do you become more certain? Need less feedback? Finally know exactly what to do? These three healthcare leaders would probably tell you the opposite. I pulled together three moments from earlier Leadership Sound Bites conversations that are very different, but share something important: moving higher in leadership doesn't eliminate uncertainty, the need to be intentional about how you show up, or the need to keep growing. Theresa Frei reflects on leading during the early days of COVID, when answers were changing quickly. She couldn't tell her leaders exactly what was coming next. What she could do was be honest about that and trust the people around her. Dr. David Schreiner shares a surprisingly simple change he made to his calendar: shortening meetings by five or ten minutes. That small amount of space gave him time to process one conversation before walking into the next and ask himself what the person in front of him deserved from him. Gina Temple talks about something that can become harder the higher you go: asking for feedback. She shares what happened when she called her supervisor after a meeting because she wasn't sure how she had come across, and why becoming a CEO doesn't mean you've finished growing. In this episode: • Leading when you don't know what's coming next, and trusting your people anyway • Creating enough space between meetings to actually be present for the next person • Asking for feedback when you're the person others look to for answers Three leaders. Three very different conversations. One reminder: leadership isn't about arriving at a place where you finally have all the answers. We never stop learning how to do it better.
