Have you ever noticed that inside your mouth, a small bell-like organ is present? Do you know the name of this organ and its function in our body? This organ present inside our mouth is called the uvula. The scientific name of the uvula is palatine uvula. As we know, our nasal cavity and oral cavity are separated from each other with the help of a wall called the palate. This palate is further divided into two parts: the soft palate and the hard palate. The hard palate is the front bony part of the palate, and the soft palate is the back soft part without any bone. The uvula is the end part of our soft palate, hanging down in our throat. It is made up of connective tissues and small muscle fibers. Salivary glands are also present in the uvula, producing saliva. The uvula performs many important functions in our body. Let's discuss these functions one by one. Number 1: When we eat food, our uvula moves to the back and blocks our nasal cavity, preventing food from entering it. Isn't it a wonderful function? Number 2: As I previously told you, salivary glands are present in our uvula, which secrete saliva. Our uvula produces a large amount of saliva that keeps our throats moist and smooth, helping us to swallow food easily. The uvula also plays an important role in our speech. We can produce many sounds with the help of our uvula and use those sounds in different languages such as French, Arabic, and Hebrew. We can also snore with the help of our uvula. Normally, when we breathe, air goes directly into our lungs through our throat. However, in some people, the growth of the soft palate and uvula is increased. In these types of people, these two parts can cause blockage in the airways when they sleep in a straight position. When these people breathe, air collides with the soft palate and uvula, causing them to flutter and producing a snoring sound. I hope you have learned something new from this information.
