Wide Biceps Are Essential for a well-developed and sculpted arm. In this video, I will discuss 2 tips that you can integrate into your biceps workout for bigger biceps and wide arms! Anatomy Review: Our biceps are made up of two heads and you have your short head which is on the inner part and the long head which is on the outer part. The main movement of the biceps is actually supination which is when you put your palm up towards the ceiling, and the secondary movement is elbow flexion which is what most people commonly associate the biceps doing. This is the reason why almost every bicep exercise is done in a supinated position! Tip 1: Train Your Brachialis Now, I know you’re probably confused with the first tip because this is a bicep video. However, your brachialis is actually the primary elbow flexor and it’s located underneath and on the outer part of the biceps. When this muscle gets bigger, it makes your arms appear much wider and also pushes your biceps and triceps out more, so your arms appear more defined. Another benefit of training your brachialis is that the increase in strength will translate to other exercises and lead to enhanced overall arm strength. So when you are performing other curls, you will be able to lift heavier which then allows you to overload your biceps even more which leads to more muscle growth! So how do we train our brachialis? If you keep a neutral grip during any curl exercise, your brachialis will take the majority of the load, and this will eventually lead to more growth. So implementing hammer curls is a great idea to implement this principle. Tip 2: Train Whichever Head Is Smaller Many people don’t realize that you can actually bias either the long or short head of the biceps. For me personally, my short head is much more developed than my long head, so I have been prioritizing long-head training into my workout routine. And it isn’t rocket science to figure out if one head is bigger than the other, you can often visually see the difference when you flex whether the inner or outer part of your biceps is bigger. Training the head that’s lagging behind will help you develop a well-rounded bicep ultimately leading to wider-looking arms! To train the short head of the biceps, you can perform wide grip barbell curls, supinated (palm up) cable curls, and concentration curls. Some exercises to bias the long head of the biceps include incline dumbbell curls, close grip chin ups which are amazing to overload the biceps, and drag curls.
