India is partnering with Japan to develop stealth technology for its warships. The technology is called UNICORN, and it stands for Unified Complex Radio Antenna. This system integrates multiple antenna systems inside a single mast and specialised radome, reducing the number of separate exposed structures that can contribute to a warship's radar signature. India's Nilgiri-class stealth frigates already incorporate features designed to reduce their detectability, but stealth isn't just about the shape of a ship. Its antennas and other exposed equipment also matter. UNICORN is designed to address part of that challenge. The similar system is already being used in Japan's Mogami-class frigates. India and Japan signed an agreement to co-develop UNICORN in November of 2024, with Bharat Electronics Limited as India's development partner, and NEC Corporation, Sampa Kogyo and Yokohama Rubber contributing expertise in system integration, antenna technology and radome engineering. In July of 2026, the prime ministers of Japan and India confirmed that an agreement had been reached in principle on the remaining technical details. In August of 2026, the defence ministers of India and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to bringing the project into operation at the earliest. However, the precise technology-transfer terms and the ships that will receive the Indian version of UNICORN have not been publicly confirmed yet.
