Have you ever found yourself crying over a misplaced key, getting furious with the sat nav, or becoming completely overwhelmed by something that normally wouldn't bother you? It probably isn't really about the keys or the sat nav. After separation or divorce, sadness, anger and anxiety don't always arrive neatly one at a time. Sometimes everything seems to pile up until something tiny becomes the final straw. This is often described as emotional flooding. In this video, I look at why those apparently disproportionate reactions can happen, what may be sitting underneath them, and why recovery after divorce rarely follows a neat, straight line. I also talk about finding those first little moments of space when everything feels overwhelming — including why sometimes being able to see the absurdity of crying in the chemist can help. This is one of the themes I explore in my book, When We Becomes Me: A Psychotherapist's Guide to the Beginning, the Messy Middle, and the Other Side of Divorce, available on Amazon. I'm Sarah-Jane Covell, a BACP-registered psychotherapist and author, and I talk about the psychology behind the thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that can be difficult to understand when relationships change or end.
