By Megan Burks The produce stalls at the City Heights Farmers Market last week were lined with strawberries so fresh they shined. Some still carried their delicate vines. Ayan Mohamed, who has an 18-month-old, was quick to exchange a Women, Infants and Children voucher for large basket of the fruit. They're her son's favorite — he likes them even more than cake, which she insisted he'd spit out in favor of something fresher. "I started with him at a very young age, as soon as he started eating solid foods," Mohamed said. "He got used to (fruits and vegetables) so that's what he eats right now." But healthy eating wasn't always a habit for Mohamed, who said she favored fast-food before becoming pregnant. She was able to change her diet because a farmers market that accepted WIC vouchers opened in her neighborhood. That market will celebrate its three-year anniversary tomorrow. Organizers of the City Heights Farmers Market have contests and entertainment to mark the success of their unlikely venture. "Everyone said, 'This market isn't going to work. Low-income people don't shop at the market,' " said Blanca Melendrez, director of the Network for a Healthy California. On its first day, however, people lined up for hours, Blanca said. And they've continued to line up every Saturday morning since. Market transactions now average about $10,000 a week, said Casey Anderson of the San Diego County Farm Bureau. Many of those transactions are made using wooden tokens for which customers exchanged CalFresh funds (food stamps), WIC vouchers and Supplemental Security Income. The market was the first in San Diego County to accept public-assistance dollars and has become a regional and national model. Do you guys like squash? As I became an adult I saw a lot of my family members with diabetes, high blood pressure and I know that that's something I didn't want for my family. So we started making healthier changes. Blanca Melendrez: San Diego County has the lowest CalFresh participation rate in the nation. So there's a lot of efforts here in San Diego County, in particularly City Heights to make sure we increase food security. Anchi Mei: Well the City Heights Farmers Market has just been an absolute success as far as EBT and supporting the CalFresh program. Since the market started there's been about $70,000 worth of EBT dollars spent at this market. Casey Anderson: Since we were certified to accept WIC and specifically EBT and because of our partnership with IRC (International Rescue Committee) and having the Fresh Fund program. We really saw that it would be a benefit to communities to open up, to bring farmers markets, bring the fresh and local San Diego produce, California produce into communities that typically have never been served by a farmers market before. Ayan Mohamed: Before, I didn't really care what I eat. I was just eating whatever I see or go drive thru food, whatever. But since I got pregnant, I changed my whole habit of how I eat because I want to be a role model for my son. Alex Pheng: The customers they go to the manager at their stand and the manager has big boxes of tokens ready to get handed out. They swipe their EBT card or their vouches they gave back to them and they exchange their tokens for that. They come to us and they pay with their tokens. Irma Timmons: It allowed me to expand my budget, my weekly budget or my monthly budget. I was able to get more fruits, vegetables, honey, eggs. Alex Pheng: People with low incomes they need that. And we need customers too. So it works out both ways. Bernardino Loera: We started here when it first opened, about three years ago now. We've been selling good here. It's one of our best markets. Casey Anderson: This market is definitely unique just because of the nature of the community that we're in. It's probably the most diverse market that you'll see. To reflect that we've really gone out of our way to try and find vendors who will sell a diversity of produce. Alex Pheng: We sell oriental vegetables, Thai chili, Filipino, Japanese, Cambodian. It's pretty rare. If it is at their local super market, it's going to be expensive, real expensive. Kap Nei Thing: There I can get Asian vegetables, at the other stores we cannot get this vegetable. Blanca Melendrez: City Heights Farmers Market has become a national model. So the whole idea now has been replicated in five other farmers markets that accept EBT and that are also incentivizing the purchase of fruits and vegetables. Ayan Mohamed: It changed a lot, my whole family, what we eat on the table.
