Corporate culture is a reflection of leadership consciousness. Richard Barrett measures it with three questions about values, and employee engagement tracks one number he calls cultural entropy. This is TBLI Radical Truth with Robert Rubinstein. Barrett built what may still be the most widely used values assessment in the world, and his argument is unusually blunt for the field: if the leaders do not change, the culture does not change, and no amount of reporting will fix it. He also thinks ESG and the SDGs address only what he calls the outer curriculum, and that the inner one is where the work actually is. Richard Barrett trained as a transportation engineer and spent years at the World Bank, becoming its values coordinator in 1995. He left in 1997 to found the Barrett Values Centre, where he was CEO for a decade, and wrote "Liberating the Corporate Soul" in 1998. He has since written a book a year, founded the Humanity Awareness Initiative, and is a founding member of the V20, an advisory group to the G20 on values. WHAT'S COVERED - The three questions: pick ten values that describe you, ten that describe how the organisation operates, ten for how you wish it operated - Cultural entropy, the measure of dysfunction, and the near straight line between it and employee engagement across 190 organisations - Why the same data cut by department, location, gender or seniority tells you where the problem actually sits - The Seven Levels model, where Maslow stopped, and what Barrett added above self-actualisation - What happens after the audit, and the leaders who quietly decide they are not the right person - The South African bank where voluntary participation went from 15% to 90% in six years, because people saw things change - Why doing this to raise profits does not work, and the intention that does - The inner curriculum and the outer curriculum, and why he thinks ESG only addresses one of them - Getting up at three every morning for twenty years, and what he does with those two hours - Pain as the trigger for change, and why he calls it positive - "Society is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment, and business is a wholly owned subsidiary of society" CHAPTERS 00:00 Introduction, and meeting Richard Barrett 04:15 A transportation engineer who wanted transformational engineering 04:46 Becoming values coordinator at the World Bank in 1995 05:18 The Seven Levels model, and where Maslow stopped 06:51 The assessment: three questions, from six people to 300,000 09:31 Cultural entropy, and the near straight line to employee engagement 13:49 "The culture of an organisation reflects the leadership consciousness" 15:20 What happens after the audit, and who refuses to act on it 17:21 Financial institutions, and the intention problem 18:29 Why it usually starts with one HR leader 20:06 The South African bank that went from 15% to 90% participation 21:35 The leaders who work out they are not the right person 25:29 Doing this to raise profits, and why that intention fails 27:38 The inner curriculum and the outer curriculum 30:19 Liberating the Corporate Soul, twenty-three years on 32:38 Three o'clock every morning, for twenty years 35:01 Why the trigger for change is pain, and why that is good news 44:18 "Society is a wholly owned subsidiary of the environment" 47:37 Purpose over profit, and the generation that already gets it 52:35 What listeners can do, starting with themselves ▶ Subscribe for a new Radical Truth conversation every week: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDBhRVM93uUnAAtqOMIz_yg?sub_confirmation=1 RELATED EPISODES - Joshua Haynes, Masawa, on founder psychology as the risk investors refuse to price. - Christopher Marquis, Cambridge Judge, on why most corporate sustainability is a smokescreen.
