In 1968, a man in a fake police uniform stopped a bank car carrying 294 million yen and stole all of it using a cheap road flare. No gun. No violence. And to this day, nobody has ever proven who he was. On a rain soaked road in Fuchu, Tokyo, four bank employees were transporting the year-end bonuses of around 800 Toshiba factory workers. A white police motorcycle pulled them over. The officer told them a bomb had been planted under their car. He crawled underneath to check, and lit a flare. They ran. He drove away in their car. What followed became the largest manhunt in Japanese history: 170,000 police officers, 110,000 suspects, and roughly 120 pieces of physical evidence left behind at the scene. Every single item was mass-produced and untraceable. The case was never solved. The statute of limitations expired in 1975, and the civil claim expired in 1988, meaning the man who did it could walk into a police station today, explain exactly how he pulled it off, and legally keep every yen. This is the story of the 300 Million Yen Incident, a masterclass in social engineering, and the most expensive crime in Japanese history committed without a single weapon. 📚 SOURCES https://worldtreasures.org/blog/the-300-million-yen-heist https://robertwhiting.substack.com/p/japans-most-infamous-heists-300-million https://www.gettyimages.in/photos/300-million-yen-robbery https://www.jiji.com/jc/d4?p=soe924&d=d4_oldnews 🎵 MUSIC "Minima" by Kevin MacLeod — licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1200053 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ "Dark Fog" by Kevin MacLeod — licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1300031 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ "Chase" by Alexander Nakarada | https://creatorchords.com Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/ Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ "Broken Promise" by Jimena Contreras "Annihilation" by kiku-58 🔔 Subscribe to VEIL for more forgotten history, unsolved mysteries and the psychology of deception. #TrueCrime #Japan #UnsolvedMystery
