On Day 11 of our Bengaluru to Ladakh Road Trip, we took a break from our long road journey to seek the blessings of Mata Vaishno Devi at Katra, Jammu and Kashmir. This was one of the most memorable experiences of our entire trip! We took a helicopter ride to reach the shrine, had a wonderful darshan of Mata Rani, and returned to Katra by trekking through the beautiful mountain route. 🙏✨ 🙏 About Vaishno Devi Temple The holy shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage destinations in India. Located in the Trikuta Hills of Jammu and Kashmir, the shrine attracts millions of devotees every year who come to seek the blessings of Mata Rani. The journey begins at Katra, the base town for the pilgrimage. From here, devotees travel uphill to Bhawan, where the sacred cave shrine is located. The pilgrimage is traditionally associated with faith, devotion, and the belief that Mata Rani calls her devotees to visit her. The atmosphere throughout the Yatra is filled with devotion, with pilgrims chanting “Jai Mata Di!” as they make their way towards the holy shrine. 🚶 Vaishno Devi Trekking – Complete Details 📍 Starting point: Katra 📍 Destination: Bhawan, Vaishno Devi Shrine 📏 Distance: Approximately 13–14 km one way, depending on the route and starting point ⏱️ Trekking time: Varies depending on fitness, crowd conditions, breaks, and route choice. The trekking route is paved and has designated resting points, refreshment stalls, medical facilities, and washrooms at various locations. However, the continuous uphill climb can be tiring, especially for first-time trekkers. Devotees can choose from different ways to reach the shrine: 🐎 1. Horse and Pony Services Horse and pony services are available on designated routes for pilgrims who cannot or do not wish to walk the entire distance. These services can help reduce the physical effort involved in the climb. Availability and fares may vary. Use authorised service providers and confirm the fare before starting. Follow the instructions of the Yatra authorities. 🪑 2. Palki / Doli Services Palki or doli services are available for pilgrims who need assistance travelling uphill. The pilgrim is carried by porters along designated sections of the route. Particularly useful for elderly devotees and people who have difficulty walking. Charges depend on the distance and applicable rates. Confirm the current authorised rates and availability at the official counters. 🚁 3. Helicopter Service Helicopter services operate between Katra and Sanjichhat, subject to weather conditions, operational schedules, and ticket availability. The helicopter significantly reduces the uphill travel time. From Sanjichhat, pilgrims must still travel approximately 2–3 km to Bhawan, depending on the route and destination. The onward journey may involve walking, pony services, or other authorised assistance. Tickets should be booked through the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board channels whenever possible. Our experience: We chose the helicopter for our journey to the shrine. The ride was a wonderful experience, and after reaching the shrine area, we proceeded for darshan. The wait and darshan process took us almost 2 hours. The darshan was absolutely beautiful and gave us a deeply satisfying spiritual experience. 🙏❤️ After receiving Mata Rani's blessings, we decided to trek all the way back to Katra. The downhill journey took us approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. It was an incredible combination of a helicopter ride, divine darshan, and a memorable mountain trek! 🙏 Our Vaishno Devi Yatra Experience ✨ Helicopter ride to Sanjichhat ✨ Journey towards the holy Bhawan ✨ Almost 2 hours for darshan ✨ Peaceful and beautiful darshan of Mata Rani ✨ Trekking all the way back to Katra ✨ Approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes for the return trek This day reminded us that our road trip is not just about covering kilometres and exploring new places. It is also about experiencing different cultures, visiting sacred destinations, and creating memories that stay with us forever.
