Frank first became curious about other languages and cultures growing up in Buffalo, New York, where he heard many languages and observed a myriad of cultural traditions among the tourists who flocked to see Niagara Falls. Frank began formal study of Mandarin Chinese at Carleton College in 2005. As he studied Mandarin, Frank grew curious about the processes of language instruction and learning, and in turn decided to first study abroad in Beijing and then move to rural China to teach English (at a public high school in Shanxi). Having enjoyed his time teaching English in rural Shanxi, Frank returned to the US and spent two years teaching Mandarin to middle school and high school students at a prep school outside of New York City. Recognizing that he wanted to commit his life to improving L2 learning of Mandarin Chinese, Frank returned to graduate school in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). Throughout Frank’s MA and PhD programs in SLA, he continued teaching L2 Mandarin and researching how technology supports second language learning. Frank’s research also focused on how teachers can make use pedagogical materials and particular speech acts to diversify patterns of participation within their classrooms. As a doctoral student, Frank’s passion for technology-enhanced language learning led him to found a technology startup focused on facilitating on-campus meetups between international and domestic students. Since graduating with his doctorate in 2019, Frank has led offices at Asia Society (in New York City) and St. Cloud State University (in Minnesota). The work of both offices is on building digital ecosystems and virtual programs that promote supportive, bilingual exchange between American and Chinese youth, exchange that is intended to support applied learning of language and culture for students who hail from diverse backgrounds. Huizhu is a Chinese software engineer working in the United States. She came to the US pursuing her love for language learning and teaching and cross-cultural communication. She observes cultural differences and is slowly finding herself along the way. At Frank Talks with TCB, she and her friend Frank exchanges ideas and share their thoughts on social phenomenon based on their own cultural backgrounds and experiences.
