SOUNDBITE(Ukrainian) Vitali Klitschko, Mayor of Kyiv: "The terror continues. For more than a week, Russia keeps attacking Kyiv, disrupting normal life in the city and destroying buildings. We are now in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, at the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, which was struck by a drone. At this point we know about one killed and three people have been hospitalized. Search-and-rescue operations are continuing. We cannot rule out the possibility that the number of people killed or injured may rise. All emergency services are at the scene and working. But I can say one thing, this is pure terror by the Russian Federation. It does not distinguish between residential buildings and historic buildings. Every Ukrainian is the enemy’s target.” 8. Klitschko said search-and-rescue operations were continuing and the number of casualties could rise. “This is pure terror by the Russian Federation. It does not distinguish between residential buildings and historic buildings. Every Ukrainian is the enemy’s target,” Klitschko told journalists. Russia’s round-the-clock bombardment of targets in Ukraine pounded apartment buildings, offices, data centers and a building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in downtown Kyiv. The Kyiv City Military Administration said a woman was killed in the attack on the capital’s Shevchenkivskyi district. The strike hit the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the latest landmark in the capital to be damaged. Russian forces also struck a pharmaceutical company and gas stations in Kyiv. The attacks followed a week of diplomatic efforts at the United Nations to get traction for negotiations on ending Moscow’s invasion that began 4½ years ago. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov indicated Monday that the chances of making speedy headway on forging a peace settlement were bleak after recent Ukrainian attacks, including during recent parliamentary elections in Russia. “Ukraine will have to pay a price for the actions that have taken place in recent months,” Peskov told reporters. “That is happening right now.” Meanwhile, Ukraine's long-range drones have repeatedly targeted Russian fuel depots and industrial plants that are a mainstay of Moscow’s economy and war effort. Ukrainian drone attacks overnight started fires at three infrastructure facilities in Russia’s Krasnodar region, local emergency officials said Monday, without identifying the locations. Russia’s Defense Ministry said air defenses downed 254 Ukrainian drones overnight.
