Everything you need to know about crossing the Amazon border from Leticia, Colombia, to Tabatinga, Brazil. Here is how you can enter Brazil without a visa in this unique zone. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to walk into another country without showing a passport, crossing a gate, or talking to a single border guard? In today’s vlog, I am taking you to one of the most fascinating geographical anomalies in the world: the invisible border between Leticia, Colombia, and Tabatinga, Brazil. Deep in the heart of the Amazon rainforest lies the Tres Fronteras (Three Frontiers) region, where Colombia, Brazil, and Peru meet along the Amazon River. But the connection between Leticia and Tabatinga is uniquely special. These two towns operate essentially as one massive, blended twin city. Separated by nothing more than a street known as Avenida da Amizade (Avenue of Friendship), you can literally take one step and completely change the country you are standing in. Historically, this region was shaped by the Amazon rubber boom in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This massive economic explosion brought rapid expansion and trade to the area, eventually forcing the nations to clearly define their boundaries in the middle of dense, uncharted jungle. However, because both Leticia and Tabatinga are incredibly isolated from their respective capital cities—Bogotá and BrasÃlia—strict border control was deemed entirely impractical. The geography dictated the rules. Today, thanks to a unique open-border treaty, locals and travelers are allowed to move freely across the line. It is a surreal experience to witness. You will see people crossing this street multiple times a day for work, groceries, or just to grab lunch. Within just a few meters, the language seamlessly switches from Spanish to Portuguese, the architecture shifts, and Colombian Pesos are traded for Brazilian Reais. In this video, we are exploring exactly what this crossing looks like on the ground. I will show you the lively Amazonian street life, the exact spot where the two countries meet, and the reality of navigating this completely open border.
