Taishanese (Hoisanese, 台山话 / Hoisan-wa) is a Yue Chinese variety spoken primarily in Taishan, Guangdong, and by millions of overseas Chinese, especially in the United States and Canada. While it shares linguistic roots with Cantonese, it is not mutually intelligible due to differences in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. Historically, Taishanese was the dominant Chinese language among early immigrants to North America, shaping the Chinese-American linguistic landscape before Cantonese and later Mandarin became more prevalent. With increasing influence from Mandarin and Cantonese, Taishanese is now considered endangered, though efforts to preserve it continue among diaspora communities. Cantonese, the traditional prestige variety of Yue Chinese, originates from Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta. With over 85.5 million native speakers, it is crucial to the cultural identity of people in southeastern China, Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas communities. In mainland China, Cantonese is the lingua franca of Guangdong province and neighboring areas like Guangxi.
