Mir Syed Jafar Ali Khan Bahadur was a commander-in-chief or military general who reigned as the first dependent Nawab of Bengal of the British East India Company. His reign has been considered by many historians as the start of the expansion of British control of the Indian subcontinent in Indian history and a key step in the eventual British domination of vast areas of pre-partition India. Mir Jafar served as the commander of the Bengali army under Siraj ud-Daulah, but betrayed him during the Battle of Plassey and ascended to the masnad after the British victory in 1757. Mir Jafar received military support from the East India Company until 1760, when he failed to satisfy various British demands. In 1758, Robert Clive discovered that Jafar had made a treaty with the Dutch East India Company at Chinsurah through his agent Khoja Wajid. Dutch ships of the line were also seen in the River Hooghly. Jafar's dispute with the British eventually led to the Battle of Chinsurah. British company official Henry Vansittart proposed that since Jafar was unable to cope with the difficulties, Mir Qasim, Jafar's son-in-law, should act as Deputy Subahdar. In October 1760, the company forced him to abdicate in favor of Qasim. However, the East India Company eventually overthrew Qasim as well due to disputes over trade policies. Jafar was restored as the Nawab in 1763 with the support of the company. Mir Qasim, however, refused to accept this and went to war against the company. Jafar ruled until his death on 5 February 1765 and lies buried at the Jafarganj Cemetery in Murshidabad, West Bengal. বিশ্বাসঘাতক মীর জাফর তার পুরো নাম ছিল মীর জাফর আলী খান। জন্মেছিল ১৬৯১ সালে। এই মীর জাফর ছিলো ইরানি বংশোদ্ভূত। তার পীতার নাম সৈয়দ আহমেদ নাজাফি। ছিল বাবা-মা র দ্বিতীয় সন্তান। পারস্য থেকে একদম নিঃস্ব হয়ে তিনি বাংলায় আসে ভাগ্যান্বেষণে। এখানে এসে বিহারের নায়েব আলীবর্দী খানের অধীনে চাকুরী শুরু করে। ১৭৫৭ সালের ২৩ জুন পলাশীর প্রান্তরে নিভে যায় বাংলা-বিহার-ওড়িশার স্বাধীনতার সূর্য। বলা যায়, ভারতবর্ষের স্বাধীনতাও অস্তমিত হয়। ১৭৫৭ সালের ২৩ জুন সকাল ৮টার দিকে যুদ্ধ আরম্ভ হয়। ক্লাইভ ছিলেন সাহসী সেনাপতি। তাঁর বাহিনীর ইংরেজ সেনাদের সাহস ও দক্ষতাও ছিল নবাব বাহিনীর চেয়ে এগিয়ে। তবে সিরাজের সেনা ছিল কোম্পানির কয়েক গুণ। সে বাহিনীতে যুক্ত ছিল ফরাসিরা। যোদ্ধা হিসেবে যারা ইংরেজের চেয়ে কোনো অংশে কম নয়। কোম্পানি সেনারও সিংহভাগ ছিল এ-দেশি। সেহেতু দুই পক্ষের যুদ্ধে নবাব বাহিনীর জয়লাভই ছিল নিশ্চিত। আর সে কারণেই রণাঙ্গনে যাওয়ার আগেই জয় নিশ্চিত করার কৌশল বেছে নেন ক্লাইভ। সিরাজের প্রধান সেনাপতি মীর জাফরকে তিনি কিনে নেন নবাব বানানোর টোপ ফেলে। নবাব সিরাজউদ্দৌলার প্রভাবশালী সেনাপতি ও সভাসদকেও তারা কিনে নেন যুদ্ধজয়ের পর পুরস্কৃত করার লোভ দেখিয়ে। নবাবের স্বজনদেরও অনেকে ইংরেজদের পক্ষ নিয়েছিলেন। মীর মর্দান, মোহন লাল, খাজা আবদুল হাদি খান, নব সিং হাজারি প্রমুখ সেনাপতির নেতৃত্বে নবাব বাহিনী বীরত্বের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করে। তবে প্রধান সেনাপতি মীর জাফর, ইয়ার লতিফ ও রায় দুর্লভ রামের অধীন নবাবের প্রায় দুই-তৃতীয়াংশ সেনা নিষ্ক্রিয়ভাবে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকে। তার পরও যুদ্ধ ছিল নবাব বাহিনীর অনুকূলে। কিন্তু বেলা ৩টার দিকে কামানের গোলায় মীর মর্দান মারা গেলে নবাব বাহিনীতে অস্থিরতা দেখা দেয়। #mirjafar #biography #opentschool #sirajuddaulah
