Free → https://pilotdebrief.com/pattern On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 carrying Lynyrd Skynyrd departed Greenville, South Carolina with a known engine malfunction the crew had never repaired. About eight miles short of their refueling stop, both engines went silent. The twin-engine Convair was bound for Baton Rouge, Louisiana under IFR at 12,000 feet, in day VMC conditions. The aircraft's two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engines were carrying the band, their crew, and two pilots — but the right engine had a known issue that required running an auto-rich mixture setting. That problem had been identified on an earlier flight and was never fixed, and running auto-rich dramatically increases fuel burn. That mechanical compromise stacked on top of inaccurate fuel planning by the crew. The math that should have been done on the ground — fuel required, fuel aboard, reserve remaining — never reconciled with the actual consumption the airplane was producing in flight. By the time the crew began the descent toward McComb Pike County Airport in Mississippi, the tanks were already running dry. Fuel exhaustion took both engines during the approach phase. The Convair came down in heavily wooded terrain near Gillsburg, Mississippi, roughly eight miles south of the intended airport. Six people were killed, including both pilots and four passengers — lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backup vocalist Cassie Gaines, and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick. Twenty-one others survived with serious injuries. The pattern is one that still kills airplanes in 2026: a deferred maintenance squawk that quietly changes the fuel equation, paired with planning numbers that were never updated to reflect what the airplane was actually burning.
