If migraine or headache attacks are disrupting your work, family or daily life, it's time to see a healthcare provider. Headache disorders like migraine are real neurological diseases, and a diagnosis opens the door to treatment. In our new season of NHF Insights, we are featuring real people, real stories, and expert guidance on migraine and headache disorders, from patients and providers side by side. Kicking off the patient series, host Dr. Jaclyn Duvall, a board-certified neurologist and headache specialist, talks with patient advocate Qasim. He had attacks from second grade but wasn't diagnosed with migraine disease until his 30s, and later with chronic migraine and hemiplegic migraine. Why do people delay getting help for migraine disease and headache disorders? Many people blame lifestyle, like dehydration, stress or noise, or believe they should "push through." Qasim describes how stigma keeps people from seeing a healthcare provider. Why does an early diagnosis matter? Migraine is a disease that can progress over time. Getting diagnosed and treated sooner can lower the chance that attacks become more frequent. What if your provider isn't listening? You don't have to settle. Keep notes on your symptoms, ask for a referral, and seek a second opinion or a headache specialist if your care isn't working. In this episode: • Why almost three decades passed before Qasim's migraine diagnosis • How stigma and "tough it out" culture delay care • Why a trusting relationship with your provider matters • How to talk to family, friends, and employers about headache disorders Dr. Jaclyn R. Duvall, M.D. is a board certified Neurologist and UCNS certified Headache Specialist and is the founder of Headache Specialists of Oklahoma. Qasim Amin Nathari is the founder of Black Men Have Migraine Too. This episode is part of NHF Insights, a podcast series from the National Headache Foundation with companion episodes for patients and healthcare providers. This episode is supported by AbbVie, Lundbeck and Pfizer. NHF reserves editorial control over all final content. ==================================================== Chapters: [00:00] Welcome to NHF Insights [01:09] Qasim's journey: three decades to a migraine diagnosis [03:20] Why a diagnosis felt liberating [03:49] How migraine disease changed his career and family life [04:48] "Give me a heads up": migraine at work [05:43] Stigma, blame and the pressure on men to push through [07:43] Settling for "good enough" care [08:48] A stroke-like attack and a hemiplegic migraine diagnosis [10:51] Why to see a headache specialist early [12:18] How to talk to your provider [13:27] When a provider doesn't listen [15:23] Why the patient-provider relationship matters [17:05] Insurance, treatment steps and options down the road [18:27] A toolbox approach to treatment [19:27] A medication that works, and one you can take at work [19:49] Talking to family and friends about migraine disease [21:31] Breaking stereotypes about who has migraine [22:37] Moving past stigma through advocacy [23:50] Looking back on childhood headache attacks [24:42] Qasim's message: there is help out there [25:29] Closing ==================================================== Subscribe for more episodes just like this: https://www.youtube.com/c/NationalHeadacheFoundation ==================================================== Visit our website: https://headaches.org/ ==================================================== Follow us on social media: Facebook: https://facebook.com/NationalHeadacheFoundation Instagram: https://instagram.com/nationalheadachefoundation Twitter: https://twitter.com/NHF ==================================================== Download our podcast: Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/nhf-insights/id1755247741 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0CbkREUwJ6lBCwo9waRlhk?si=4d08406c1f6a4f27
