There is a temple of Lord Krishna in Udupi, Karnataka and in the premises of this temple is hidden a huge treasure gifted by a Muslim Sultan and to protect it, a temple of Lord Subramanya was built over it. It is said that the treasure should be used only when the money to feed the people in the temple runs out! But why did the Sultan gift such a huge treasure to a Hindu temple? Actually when Sri Vadiraja Tirtha was the Dvaita head of the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha in the 16th century, he was on a pilgrimage in North India – somewhere near Delhi. At that time, Delhi was ruled by the Sultan. Some of the Sultan's soldiers objected to his praying at a graveyard. They told the saint that the place contained the dead remains of the Sultan's son. To this, Sri Vadiraja replied that this was not true and in fact the body was alive. The soldiers went and complained to their Sultan, who himself reached the place. He found that the saint was performing puja at the end of which the Sultan's son got up from his grave. Grateful, the Sultan presented Vadiraja with wealth, which the sage threw into the Ganga River – saying that the wealth was of no use to him. The Sultan again approached him with more treasure and insisted that he use it for the temple.
