Dorian lives with feline hyperesthesia syndrome (FHS), a condition that can cause episodes of extreme skin sensitivity, twitching or rippling skin, sudden grooming or biting, agitation, dilated pupils, and sensitivity to touch. For Dorian, one of the hardest parts is something people may never see: touch that normally feels safe can sometimes become uncomfortable or painful. That can make petting, playing, and even normal grooming or affection from another cat difficult. A cat may hiss, swat, hide, or avoid interaction—not because they are “mean,” but because they are trying to communicate discomfort. FHS can look different from cat to cat. Some cats have frequent or severe episodes and may require ongoing medication and management. Dorian’s episodes are much less frequent, so he rarely requires medication. But this is changing as he ages. Sudden sensitivity, aggression, excessive grooming, twitching, or other behavioral changes should always be discussed with a veterinarian. These signs are not specific to FHS, and other medical conditions can cause similar behavior. Living with Dorian has taught me that behavior is communication. Respect the warning. Learn their boundaries. Give them somewhere safe to retreat. And never punish a cat for trying to tell you that something hurts. Dorian will never understand why love sometimes hurts.
