I stood by my wardrobe at quarter past eight, Considering sleeves and the meaning of “great.” Was greatness a collar? A fabulous shoe? And who gets to choose what looks splendid on who? The jacket said, “Structure!” The scarf said, “Let’s flow!” The hat said, “I’m ready. Are we going to go?” But first came a pamphlet from What-One-Should-Wear, With rules about buttons and rules about hair. “Wear less of the this! Wear more of the that! And kindly reconsider Your rather large hat.” I studied the pamphlet. I studied my head. “I’ll consider a smaller-sized pamphlet,” I said. For clothes are ideas you can button and zip, Then take for a walk or a small shopping trip. A thought can have pockets! A mood can have pleats! A marvelous notion can stroll down the streets! My ruby was little. My T-shirt was loud. My jacket looked ready to speak to a crowd. Together they made quite a curious sight: A lecture in velvet, With Friday-night bite. Now thousands of people could purchase this tee, But none of those thousands would wear it as me. They’d choose other trousers. They’d roll up a sleeve. They’d tuck it or knot it or just let it leave A little more room at the waist for a breeze. There’s plenty of thinking in dressing with ease. “Be YOU!” said the pamphlet. “But here is the trick: Be you in the outfits We happen to pick.” How funny, I thought, To be offered a choice That comes with instructions For using my voice. I might like their stripes! I might love their blue! I might find a wonderful buckle or two! But surely my taste gets a chair at the chat. It lives in these clothes. It should vote on the hat. And what if tomorrow I fancy a change? Would yesterday’s velvet find cotton quite strange? Must all of my outfits agree in a row? Can one say “Perhaps” While another says “GO”? I’m certain a person has room to contain A sensible coat and a rather bright train Of ribbons and colors and wonderful things. A wardrobe can welcome what Wednesday brings. Then out came the question Of what counts as “more.” I added a bracelet. Then three. Then four. The scarf met the necklace. The necklace met lace. The brooch had to ask for a small parking space. “Excuse me,” my neckline said, “Who’s speaking next? I’m having some trouble with all of this text.” I took off two bangles. I shifted one pin. The shirt gave a sigh. You could see it again. Some outfits want plenty. Some outfits want few. The looking is part of the choosing you do. And fit! Let us speak of the glorious FIT! Can you reach. Can you comfortably sit? A coat may look grand on a tall wooden stand, But I have appointments that weren’t hanger-planned. I need it to move when I move through my day. A sleeve should have something cooperative to say. Then somebody whispered, “You’ve worn that before.” “How lovely,” I answered. “I’ll wear it some more.” We play favorite records. We order good tea. Why ration a jacket That works well for me? A thing can be familiar And still be a treat. My shoes have enjoyed Several dates with my feet. I turned to the mirror. It checked on my hem. It helped with the earrings. I straightened a gem. But when I asked, “Mirror, What makes a life good?” It showed me my collar. As mirrors quite should. A mirror has talents. Let’s grant it its due. It knows where your hat is. The rest is on you. So what is the point Of this dressing and thought? Of the things that we keep And the things that we’ve bought? Perhaps there is pleasure in choosing with care, In finding a color you’re happy to wear. In trying a shape you had never considered, Then leaving the house looking thoroughly glittered. No banquet was booked. No grand prize was due. I simply had errands. And excellent shoes. The meaning of everything? Still being discussed. But the hat and I Had a bus to catch. And a very good hat Doesn’t like to be rushed.
