The Greenland shark lives in the cold, deep waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic, and it grows at an incredibly slow pace, around a centimeter a year. Because its body has no hard bones that can be counted like tree rings, its age long remained a mystery. In 2016, a team of researchers found a clever solution. They used radiocarbon dating on the proteins in the sharks’ eye lenses, which form before birth and never change afterward. They studied 28 sharks that had died after being caught accidentally in fishing nets. The largest, a female about five meters long, was estimated to be around 392 years old, though the uncertainty was large, anywhere between about 272 and 512 years. Even at the low end, it makes the Greenland shark the longest-living vertebrate known to science.
