Interview with the top global expert on addiction: Professor Robert West | Lina Tabasaranskaia In this episode, I sit down with Professor Robert West — one of the world's leading experts on addiction, behaviour change and the science of why we do what we do, even when we know it is harming us. https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/10502-robert-west/about Professor West is Emeritus Professor of Health Psychology at University College London and the founder of PRIME Theory — a groundbreaking framework that explains addiction not as a simple failure of willpower or a moral weakness, but as a disorder of the motivational system deep in the brain. He is also co-founder of the COM-B model and the Behaviour Change Wheel, frameworks that are now used by governments, health services and organisations around the world to design interventions that actually work. Over the course of his career, Professor West has advised the UK Department of Health, Public Health England, Public Health Wales, the College of Policing, and pharmaceutical companies developing the next generation of cessation medications. He founded the Smoking Toolkit Study — one of the longest running surveillance programmes tracking smoking behaviour in England — and served as Editor-in-Chief of the leading scientific journal Addiction. He has published nearly 1,000 scientific papers and written what many consider the definitive book on addiction theory. In this conversation we explore: -What addiction really is — and why the way most of us think about it is wrong -Why willpower is largely a myth when it comes to breaking addictive behaviour -The role of identity, trauma, emotion and social connection in addiction and recovery -Whether addiction ever truly goes away — or whether recovery is really something else entirely -What friends and family can actually do to help someone they love who is struggling -What needs to urgently change about how addiction is treated in the UK -The cutting edge of addiction science — from psychedelics to AI to the gut microbiome -And the one thing Professor West would say to anyone watching who is quietly struggling with something they feel they cannot control This is one of the most honest, illuminating and genuinely compassionate conversations about addiction you will find anywhere. Whether you are personally affected by addiction, work in health or social care, or simply want to understand one of the most complex aspects of human behaviour — this episode is for you. Professor Robert West's book Theory of Addiction is available now. His research and frameworks can be explored at com-b.org and behaviourchangewheel.com.
