AI Destroyed The Digital Artist, performed by Paws and Effect at BLFC in October 2024. Subtitles provided. This modern parody, based on the 80s hit 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by The Buggles, is a contemporary commentary on AI art. In the same vein as the song's original message, it's a reflection on how technological advancements can disrupt established creative artforms, sometimes with sad consequences. 'Video Killed The Radio Star' was originally written by Geoff Downes, Trevor Horn, and Bruce Woolley and Performed by The Buggles (1979). Paws and Effect is a satirical comedy group who performs furry-themed and modern parodies of classic songs. We provide lyrics during our live shows for both accessibility and to encourage singalong. For more information or bookings, visit: https://pawsandeffectband.com While some may claim it is ironic we've chosen to parody an existing song to commentate about AI art theft, there is a massive difference between parody and theft. Parody is a long-existing, and often legally-protected tradition of creativity that uses humor to commentate on an existing piece of music or the topic which it represents. Artists who popularized this, like Weird Al Yankovic, have always been very clear about recognizing the source material and the artists behind the original music. In fact, the effect of a parody also relies upon the audience’s recognition of the original track to actually work. It’s a transformative form of expression, which can also change the meaning and message of the original song in a way that adds a fresh perspective, which is why it is often protected under fair use. Compare that to AI generated content, which scrapes and repurposes existing works without any acknowledgement of the original artist, or transparency about how it was made. It simply produces content that heavily resembles the work of others but fails to give credit to the original artists. Parody is clear about its connection to the source material, but AI does its best to erase this connection entirely. It pretty much takes somebody else’s work with zero accountability. Therefore, AI generated music is closer to theft than anything else.
