Discover the curious history of fish and chips in Victorian London as we explore the streets where one of Britain’s favourite meals took shape. From the Sephardic Jewish tradition of fried fish to the early chippies of the East End, join me on a journey through London’s culinary past, with Charles Dickens and Victorian journalist Henry Mayhew helping to guide the way. Along the route, we’ll meet a street seller nicknamed ‘Fishy’, discover what Londoners ate before chips caught on, and investigate the competing claims to Britain’s first fish and chip shop. There are also dubious ingredients, late-night disturbances and the rise of Samuel Isaacs’ sit-down fish restaurants… complete with bread, butter and a cup of tea! We’ll visit the sites associated with Joseph Malin’s pioneering business, uncover its surprising American connection, and take a look at some of London’s best-loved surviving chippies, including the Golden Hind, Fryer’s Delight and the Rock and Sole Plaice. Have you eaten at any of the shops featured? And where would you recommend- please be sure to let me know in the comments! *** Chapters 00:00 Introduction- A Victorian Fish Supper 01:21 The Jewish Roots of Fried Fish 02:48 Charles Dickens, 'Fishy' and London's Street Sellers 05:03 London's Early Fried Fish Shops 06:11 What About the Chips? 08:13 Who opened Britain's First Fish & Chip Shop? 09:55 Fuel for the Industrial Revolution 10:29 Dodgy Ingredients & Late-Night Trouble 13:08 Samuel Isaacs- 'This Is the Plaice' 13:48 Malin's of Bow & its American Afterlife 15:16 London's Historic Chippies Today 16:59 Outro *** Thank you so much to all of you who support my channel with your kind words, likes and shares.
