(20 Sep 1997) English/Nat International regatta teams gathered in South Africa on Saturday and paid tribute to twelve competitors - still missing after a German military plane collided with a U-S military plane last week. The Germans were on their way to Cape Town to take part in the event when the accident happened off the Namibian coast. Only one body - that of a German flight hostess - has so far been found in the cold waters off Namibia's Skeleton Coast. In all, thirty two people are still missing. Saturday's opening ceremony of the inter-navy regatta challenge in Simonstown, South Africa, was supposed to be a celebration. Instead, members of the 12 teams participating in the event to celebrate the South African navy's 75th birthday, were paying tribute to the 12 German competitors who never made it to the competition. Following tradition, participating teams - including France, India, Russia and Australia - normally raise their countries' flags. But this time, they remained at half mast. The twelve missing German sailors were on board a German Tupolev 154 from Germany to South Africa when it crashed with an American C-141 from Namibia to Ascension Island in the south Atlantic. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The shadow of the tragic air accidents of both a German and American aircraft last weekend is reflected here in the half-masted colours, and the wreaths that have been laid. We, as a navy, feel a great sense of concern for the missing and sorrow for the dead." SUPER CAPTION: Rear Admiral Martin Trainor, South African Navy After the formalities, twelve wreaths were taken out to sea and thrown in the water in honour of the German sailors. The German plane was carrying 24 passengers - the 12 navy men, two spouses and ten crew members. Although nothing has been heard since faint distress signals last Sunday and early on Monday, the search area was expanded on Friday. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We will carry on searching with seven or eight aircraft, special aircraft long-range maritime patrol aircraft from the German navy, South African aircraft, American aircraft, a French frigate is taking place and a German frigate is on its way to the scene to continue with the search as long as possible." SUPER CAPTION: German Defence Attache Captain Bito Housselle Officials said the American C-141 was carrying two 20-person life rafts that could have drifted far from the crash site. No significant wreckage has been found since a 5- by 10-metre piece of debris from the American plane was discovered on Wednesday. But searchers finally got a break on Friday from the low clouds and dense fog that had hampered their efforts off the Namibian coast. Eight aircraft are now searching the area and a light aircraft is scouring the coastline for wreckage that may have washed up on the beach. A spokesperson for the South African Airforce said the U-S Navy had dropped sonar buoys in the primary search area, where the planes were suspected of having gone down. That was an attempt to locate the flight recorders. Several Namibian fishing vessels have been involved in the search. But 32 people are still missing.
