A Christian called into my live and told me Paul's letters prove that ethnic Israel is irrelevant. He said Paul explicitly states that Christians are the true Jews. I said: give me the verse. He gave me Romans 2:29. Romans 2:29 says a person is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is of the heart. I agreed with that. But that's not replacement theology. That verse says Gentiles can be grafted in through faith. It says nothing about the end of ethnic Israel. He had quoted a verse that doesn't say what he thought it said. I read him Romans 11. God has not rejected his people, Paul says this explicitly, "by no means." He says he himself is an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin. He says there is a hardening over ethnic Israel until all Gentiles are grafted in, and only then will all of Israel be complete. That hardening is supposed to happen. It is required by Paul's own theology. What he was disagreeing with was not my argument. He was disagreeing with Paul. He also didn't know why it's called the West Bank. The region sits on the east side of Israel. Jordan, which only declared independence in 1946, two years before Israel, coined the term. It's west of the Jordan River, from Jordan's perspective. I asked him: as a Christian debating this topic, why are you using a political term invented by a country that was two years old? I asked him what country Jaffa is in. He said Palestine. In Hebrew and ancient Egyptian, Philistine means invader. When you say "I'm from Palestine," you're saying you're from the land of invaders. I walked him through a set of questions about Hamas.
